Pointer Sisters

The Pointer Sisters have been on my record player non-stop - their combination of jazz, soul and be bop has the power to turn after hours drinks in the attic to a frenetic dance party in a heartbeat.

Whilst satisfying my obsession I noticed that not only do they rule on my stereo, but their choices in adornment seem to mirror the major trends happening right now - it may be one of those "chicken or the egg" scenarios, but they look amazing at every turn regardless! Let me take you on a walk through the 70's and 80's with my favorite sisters (next to The Scissor Sisters, Russell Sisters, and Travelling Sisterhood of the Ya-Ya Pants)

This is the mother of 'hobo chic' !  It should consist of second hand clothing in a drab palette and be put together in  loose and useless layers. And check out the foresight on gladiator sandals (will they ever die?)
Did you know these babes won a Grammy For Best Country Performance in 1975? Here they are looking decidedly  unbumpkin. I love this photo.
Balmain and Gucci were definitely paying attention to the Sisters. Check out the dramatically padded shoulders and cinched waists giving power-suit sex appeal of these babes.

Miu Miu Fall 2011
I can only assume Miuccia Prada has been listening to the same album rotation as me -  he used the 40's to inspire the dresses, sunglasses and shoes of his Fall 2011 collection. Actually, when the Pointer Sisters signed their first record deal in the early 70's they collected thrifted 1940's dresses to use as costumes. They did this as a remembrance of their poverty-stricken childhood and to avoid looking like clones pumped out of the pop music machine. Recreating outfits from second hand became part of their signature style.
Bell bottoms, trench coats, blouses and suede. It's like it's happening...like right now.
